Rude Jude & RA on Shade45

Rude Jude, co-host of the All Out Show on Sirius Satellite Radio's Shade45, was without vacationing co-host Lord Sear last week. When Sear is away, Jude finds guests to keep himself and the listeners entertained. This was no exception. On Wednesday, Rude Jude had rapper and media personality R.A. The Ruggedman on the air. Listen below as the fireworks erupted between Jude and R.A. over the current state of rap music, what's pop and what's hip-hop, MC Hammer vs. Joeskie Love, and who has more 'rap credibility' and knowledge. It sounds like it got pretty heated, but I'm sure it was all in good fun. Or was it? You be the entertained judge as the two rap pundits go at it.

"You grew up on Ice Baby" AHHAHAHAHHA

We all did DUMMY! If you don't remember, anywhere outside of LA and NYC had EXTREMELY LIMITED ACCESS TO HOP... We learned most things from Yo!, Rap City, random college radio and taking 12 dollar chances in record stores... But Rugged Man wouldn't know that b/c he was in NY...

I'm on RA's side here. Even though I like Kanye.

Hammer was always wack. Vanilla Ice too. And I'm not from the east coast or even a big city.

that argument is hilarious!

Im with Jude on this one though..
Hammers first album was gettin love before 'U Cant Touch This' blew up. Kids in my neighbourhood where playin that alongside all the Def Jam artists, BDP, Ice-T, Eric B & Rakim etc etc...
Sounds like RA cant accept that Hip-Hop covers the broad spectrum that it does. Party style rappers deserve their respect just as much as the hardcore mc's... its close minded to say they are not truly part of Hip-Hop.

This is a miserable clusterfuck of a debate so mired in egotism and regional vanity that there's no productive conclusion.

RA makes a preposterous comparison between Hammer and Kanye, raising the question of whether he's actually listened to (not simply heard) the lyrics of either, and then Rude Jude goes too far in trying to assert the "legitimacy" of MC Hammer. Then when RA sort of alludes to that awful "hip hop v.s. pop" nonsense, you know it's headed for disaster.

As soon as you start stipulating a certain qualitative standard to simply make a style of music (i.e. it has to be "hard/real/conscious/smart" to be "real hip hop") then it totally ruins any sensible criticism of the music.
